TELC’s Conviction

We practice Brain- Based Learning and Higher Order Thinking Skills, theories which are based on the structure and functions of the brain. Habits of Mind is also incorporated into our daily curriculum, encouraging behaviours that require a discipline of the mind that is practiced so they become a habitual way of working towards a more thoughtful, intelligent action. The Habits of Mind include persistence, managing impulsivity, thinking flexibility, metacognition, applying past knowledge to new situations, thinking and communicating with clarity and precision and remaining open to continuous learning.

Our philosophy is based on a set of strongly held beliefs, where our children are taught critical thinking skills, problem solving and decision making abilities that make a child safer in today’s world.

The skills and knowledge children learn today play a major role in determining who they’ll be tomorrow.

We provide a total curriculum which allows for the optimal growth of children in all areas, emphasizing on child-selected, child-directed activities, whereby the value of play is the most significant mode of learning. We believe every child is an individual and they perceive and process information in various different learning styles. We work towards independence where children are challenged and every individual is valued. The child is treated and respected as an individual, who also functions as a member of a group.

TELC’s philosophy is based on a developmental approach which emphasises learning through the Experiential Learning Approach.

Experiential Learning is a procedure based on the systematic development and modification of one’s action theory (taking actions and simultaneously reflecting on one’s actions to learn from it).

Experiential Learning is concerned with how prior knowledge influences performance on certain cognitive tasks. It examines the children’s ability to deal with novelty and the degree to which thought process is atomized.

Effective Experiential Learning will affect children’s thinking, attitudes, values and behaviour patterns. An accepting and caring social environment together with the support from the informed teachers encourage children to experiment with learning.

TELC’s Beliefs

Children learn best if they are immersed in complex experiences and are given the opportunity to actively process what they have learnt. The best learning happens when necessary facts and skills are embedded in experiences that relate to real life.

We believe that children function best when they are given freedom, encouragement and guidance to use their initiative, exercise their thinking and decision-making powers, and to demonstrate that they can be effective, responsible and responsive individuals.

At TELC, we design and carry out child-appropriate activities for the multiple goals of promoting the intellectual, socio-emotional, aesthetic and physical development of young children.
